(In contrast - I've never really been able to get into poetry. Go figure.) But a lot of short stories do later develop into novels: an author just gets a good idea and runs with it. A notable example is Haruki Murakami's "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle," which originally was a short story from "The Elephant Vanishes" by the same name. It's an interesting and curious phenomena.

I'd suggest giving Kelly Link a try - she's a fabulous writer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710818943922563736.post-18055842448565366172009-07-11T11:16:43.356-04:002009-07-11T11:16:43.356-04:00"A" for effort, you know? I think it may have been because I associated short stories with those high school years when we did one every week and accompanied it was a nice, lengthy essay. But, I've come to enjoy reading them now (if they're good). They're nice to bring for a commute (you can read it in one sitting) and you can think about it the rest of the way home.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710818943922563736.post-12931769696974877302009-07-07T10:47:59.869-04:002009-07-07T10:47:59.869-04:00I'm so proud of you, Megan, for continuing the...I'm so proud of you, Megan, for continuing the battle! I'll have to make note of the author and look for the book when it comes out.

I read a short story anthology once that included a few by authors I was already familiar with. I was particularly excited about one of the stories--only to discover it was an excerpt from the novel I'd just read by the same author. I was so disappointed. I'm not as eager to read anthologies like that again, however unfair that may be to the other authors who contribute to them.

I agree with Elizabeth though. You deserve a full point for the story you read. If you thought you were reading a short story, then you were for all intents and purposes.Literary Felinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13079276242303738719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1710818943922563736.post-51083485107255346812009-07-06T22:37:52.380-04:002009-07-06T22:37:52.380-04:00Personally, I think you deserve the full point.
